Medical Genetics

Clientele

The medical genetics collection can be found at the Eric Hamber Memorial Library. The Hamber Library provides library service to UBC faculty, staff, students and affiliated researchers who work and/or study at the BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH), the BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre (BCWH), the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI), and the Women’s Health Research Institute (WHRI). Library services support the clinical care, teaching and research activities of the hospitals and research institutes

Overview of the strengths of the existing collection

The local collection at the Hamber Library focuses on clinical care and teaching in the programs and services provided by BCCH and BCWH, and effort is made to maintain the currency and relevancy of the collection.

Current areas of collecting

The selector at the Hamber Library selects material related to medical genetics and other subjects relating to the work conducted at the hospitals it supports.

Form

The Hamber Library collects primarily monographs and serials. Government publications, technical reports, conference proceedings, pamphlets and ephemera are collected selectively and minimally. An increasing percentage of the budget is being spent on electronic resources, particularly e-journals, databases, indexes and e-books.

Chronological limits

Coverage

There are no chronological exclusions, although the emphasis is on material produced in the last 10 years.

Publication date

New materials selected should be restricted to those with a publication date of the current or previous year. Retrospective purchasing to replace missing or damaged items is occasionally but infrequently done.

Languages

Only English language material is collected.

Geographic origin

Emphasis is on Canadian, American, and British publications.

Exclusions

Dissertations, translations, workbooks, laboratory manuals, yearbooks, annual reports, newsletters, manuscripts and personal papers are excluded. Audiovisual materials (DVD is the preferred format) are very selectively collected, in general only in response to user requests or when accompanying printed monographs.
