SPARC is hosting an upcoming webcast on the future of e-books. Here’s the blurb:

Innovation, the future of e-books, and the Archaeology of the Americas Digital Monograph Initiative
An online event co-sponsored by SPARC and AAUP
Tuesday, July 27, 2010
12:00 – 1:00PM EST
Registration is free, but required. RSVP by July 26 at http://www.arl.org/sparc/meetings/register.

The Archaeology of the Americas Digital Monograph Initiative is a collaboration of six presses seeking to explore the creation and dissemination of enhanced digital monographs in New World archaeology. As such, it represents an important effort to sketch out the future of the scholarly e-book and business models capable of supporting it. Funded by Mellon in March 2009, the project immediately confronted a technological landscape of proliferating mobile reading devices and digital distribution channels. Project leaders hope to negotiate this rapidly changing environment by focusing on business innovation and leveraging a network of technology and channel partnerships that will provide a system for publishing enhanced monographs in an economical, sustainable fashion.

On July 27, Darrin Pratt, Director of the University Press of Colorado, will join us to explore the initiative, how it was started and funded, the network of partnerships involved, challenges, lessons, and what they envision next. Originally conceived for the Innovation and Future of E-books panel at the June meeting of the Association of American University Presses, Darrin’s presentation will also touch on the highlights from that discussion.

Grove Updating Program

This major program to update articles in Grove Music Online is an ongoing priority for the Grove editorial team at Oxford University Press. New print projects and targeted online-only projects provide updates to hundreds of entries each year, but with over 50,000 entries online, maintaining Grove must be a joint, ongoing effort between the scholarly community and the publisher. On behalf of Editor in Chief Deane Root, OUP invites you to participate.

Submit updates to articles

Suggest corrections, revisions, or new articles

Tell us what you think

The editorial team is actively reaching out to Grove contributors for corrections, updates, and suggestions for revisions, and we also flag entries that should be regularly revisited. We have over 5,000 authors to contact, and the contact information for many is out of date. If you are a previous contributor, we encourage you to get in touch. We also welcome any other suggestions or feedback from readers.

Two major articles that were updated recently by their original author through this program include “Exoticism” and “Orientalism.”

Contribute to the updating program by emailing the editors at updateGMO@oup.com.

We are pleased to announce that Scottish Legal History: Featuring Publications of the Stair Society is now available as an a-la-carte Library in HeinOnline!

HeinOnline has partnered with the Stair Society to bring the history of Scots Law to the forefront, providing access in an online searchable format that has never been available before! HeinOnline’s Scottish Legal History library is built upon our new legal research platform which brings together the primary sources on Scots Law and other sources, including books, abridgments and links to scholarly law review articles, into one database.

Founded in 1934, the Stair Society serves to encourage the study and advance the knowledge of the history of Scots Law by the publication of original documents and by the reprinting and editing of works of sufficient rarity or importance. It was named after Scotland’s greatest jurist whose Institutions of the Law of Scotland was first published in 1681 and is considered the foundation of modern Scots Law.

This Library Includes:

Official Publications from the Stair Society

Stair Society Main (Annual) Series Vols. 1-53 (1936-2008)

Supplementary Series Vols. 1-3

Featured works on Scottish Legal History

Links to scholarly articles

Stair Society Main (Annual) Series Vols. 1-53 (1936-2008)

When the Stair Society was founded in 1934, material in Scotland for the legal historian was curiously sparse, curious since there are few countries whose legal inheritance is more varied than that of Scotland. For their first publication in 1935, the Society chose to produce an introductory survey of the sources and literature of Scots Law. This first volume, now out of print, provided the first comprehensive legal-historical bibliography available for the law of Scotland, and by means of short introductory essays, canvassed the sources available.

Browse the Stair Society Main (Annual) Series by Stair Volume or Publication Year, Title, Title Volume, Coverage or Editor, using a custom chart of documents. Sort the chart by any of these parameters.

Stair Society Supplementary Series Vols. 1-3

The Supplementary Series contains the following volumes:

College of Justice -Supp. Vol I (1990)

Civil Law Tradition in Scotland – Supp. Vol II (1995)

Guide to the National Archives of Scotland – Supp. Vol III (1996)

Project MUSE kicks off its fifteenth year of providing libraries with the best humanities and social science content from the not-for-profit publishing community by welcoming ten new participating publishers. To date, twenty new titles are confirmed for inclusion in the Project MUSE electronic journal collections for the 2011 subscription term. MUSE also continues to grow its archival coverage for many participating journals. Project MUSE pricing for 2011 has also been finalized.

Publishers new to MUSE for 2011 include the Society of Biblical Literature, the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study, the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association, and the National Association of Professors of Hebrew, among others. Eight of MUSE’s long-time participating publishers, including the Duke University Press, Indiana University Press, University of Illinois Press, and University of North Carolina Press, are contributing new journal titles to the MUSE collections. In addition to the twenty currently confirmed new titles (see list below), approximately ten further titles are expected to join MUSE for 2011, and will be announced shortly.

The 2011 additions supplement a collection now offering current and archival content from over 450 respected, peer-reviewed journals. MUSE recently announced the inclusion of 14 additional titles to come online during the current 2010 subscription term (see details at http://bit.ly/96Dhyi). MUSE now partners with more than 100 not-for-profit university presses, scholarly societies, and other independent publishers to make their content available digitally through our several interdisciplinary collections.

Project MUSE’s initiative to incorporate back issues from many participating journals continues to grow. With the release of back issue content from six more titles in late June, there are now more than 60 journals offering complete archival coverage, from the first volume and issue, in MUSE. Nearly 100 titles have committed to participate in the MUSE back issues program to date, and all archival content will be made available to current subscribers to applicable titles at no additional charge.

In recognition of the continuing effects of the economic climate on our subscribing libraries, MUSE is once again moderating price increases for 2011 while incorporating new content into all collections. Rates for MUSE’s Premium Collection, a comprehensive, growth-oriented collection that includes all new titles added to MUSE each year, will increase by 6%. Prices for the MUSE Standard and Humanities Collections will increase by 4%, while the Basic Research and Basic College collections will see increases of 2%. There will be no price increase for the MUSE Social Sciences Collection. Complete 2011 pricing and collection information will be posted on the MUSE web site by early August.
